Last Sunday night I spent some time with a few of my favorite people under the setting sun.

Last Sunday night we also celebrated something pretty special. It marked a year since a day that my family will never forget when my five year old nephew, Brooks, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Thankfully, it also marked a year of his successful surgery to remove the tumor and a year of healing and answered prayers for him.
My brother’s reflection has a great message:
“August 13, 2016, started off as the beginning of our summer ‘staycation’ with our cousins from Ohio but ended with our worst nightmare. I’ll never forget the moment I was told my 5 year old had a brain tumor the size of a lime. Not knowing what was in store for him, the thoughts crossing my mind of all the worst case scenarios, not being able to do anything for him, complete helplessness when I am supposed to be his protector – all a whirlwind in my head. Now, after a year of him completely healing and continued monitoring, it’s confirmed his tumor is gone and there is no reason to believe it is ever coming back. We celebrated with donuts today after mass which was fitting because he lived on donuts in the hospital during his recovery. We are so blessed to have witnessed a miracle in his healing, and God continues to give us signs of comfort even a year after this all happened…It’s pretty amazing how He speaks to us if you just open your ears and listen. And while we were blessed to have a best case scenario in a worst case situation, that doesn’t happen all the time. If you took the time to read this, thank you, but more importantly, if you feel so inclined, please say a prayer for all those kids who don’t have the greatest diagnosis in the hospitals right now. Miracles happen and prayer is powerful.”

So we celebrated together as a family earlier that day, starting with prayers of thanks and praying for so many other children. We then continued to celebrate into the night, letting the kids be little, all while being smothered in kisses, cuddles, and tickles.
I hope it was a celebration they will never forget! I know I won’t.
